Northern Ireland's politicians are set to embark on an intensive round of negotiations to remove the final barriers to power sharing in the province.

Northern Ireland's politicians are set to embark on an intensive round of negotiations to remove the final barriers to power sharing in the province.

Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern will host the talks in St Andrews in Scotland aimed at meeting the November 24 deadline for devolution at Stormont.

Security was expected to be tight in the Fife town, which is best known for being the home of golf.

The parties and the two Prime Ministers will arrive this afternoon, with Mr Blair and Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain travelling from London following Prime Minister's Questions.

Optimism has been growing in London and Dublin following last week's report by Northern Ireland ceasefire watchdog the Independent Monitoring Commission which claimed the IRA was making substantial progress in dismantling its terrorist structures.
